Encore has welcomed the Hotel Water Measurement Initiative (HWMI) as another step forward in reducing usage across the world.

The Hotel Water Measurement Initiative has been created by the International Tourism Partnership with 18 global hotel groups.

These are:
Accor, Carlson Rezidor, Diamond Resorts, Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, Hilton Worldwide, Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotels Group, Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Marriott International, MGM Hotels & Resorts, NH Hotel Group, Soneva, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces, Whitbread, and Wyndham Worldwide Resorts.

The Hotel Water Measurement Initiative is the result of 18 months of work to develop a free methodology and calculation tool that will enable hotels to measure and report on water consumption in a consistent way.

It will allow any hotel anywhere in the world to measure and report on the water footprint of a hotel stay, meeting or event in exactly the same way.

KPMG was the technical partner with feedback provided by a stakeholder steering group of global experts including the Stockholm International Water Institute, Water Footprint Network, CPD and CEO Water Mandate.

Encore Director, Graham Kelly, said: “The Hotel Water Measurement Initiative is very positive especially as 18 global hotel groups have made such a strong commitment to reducing water usage.

“By their very nature, hotels have to consume a lot of water but they are as committed as we are to reducing the amount used and protecting a resource that is becoming ever more precious.

“Encore is perfectly suited to hotels as they have toilets and air conditioning units in every room so we can save hotels millions of litres of water every year very simply.”
